Back to Mill & Sails Repainting Projects Buck Sails

The mill was scaffolded in late July 2009 and volunteers repainted the entire buck. Window frames were repaired and repainted. The lead on the roof, suspected as being the root cause of an intractable leak, was replaced by an outside contractor.

Scaffolded Mill with Painting Volunteers and Lead Replacement

According to the minutes of the July 27th 2009 Board meeting, Mr. Casebow reported that the final sail had been cleaned and painted, as had the main door, above which a weather strip had been fitted. On the day following the fête, Bailey Scaffolding had erected scaffolding. The roof of the mill has been cleaned, prior to applying the first coat of Sadolin. All but one of the weather boards around the windows had been replaced, all of the windows had been cleaned, primed and re-puttied, where necessary, and they are now ready for painting once the final coat of Sadolin has been applied. An ex-pupil, who runs Kingsley Roofing, had been consulted about the best way to replace the lead strip on the roof, and he had kindly offered to send one of his lead workers to do the job for just the cost of the materials. He also agreed that we could get him to re-cover the Poll-end box section at the same time, ideally before the final coat of Sadolin. One or two boards are either split or have some rot in them, and this could be dealt with by fitting some flashing under these areas and applying a coat of tar to fill the splits. After 25 years, the cladding is in remarkably sound condition. It is hoped to complete the work and remove the scaffolding within ten days or so, dependent upon the weather.
