Rope or cord is used in the windmill in several ways.
- On the Sail Cloths to tie to each Common Sail.
- On the Brake to allow operation from outside the windmill.
- On the Sack Hoists to raise/lower sacks of flour and meal.
- On the Sack Hoist friction wheels to engage/disengage the friction drive.
- On the Rabbit Spring for the Grain Alarm
- On the Grain Chute angle adjuster.
- Across the bottom steps on Open Days to assist the Step Controller
- On the Nutley Wind Generator to brake/release the rotor.
- With the metal stanchions for the lesser barrier around the sails when there are no children or animals on site.
- With the metal stanchions by the Gatehouse to assist the Gatekeeper with flow of visitors on arrival.
- When raising the Runner Stone for cleaning.
When using rope it is useful to know the following.

- Clove Hitch for attaching barrier rope to stanchions.
- Bowline for securing around waist when using a rope as a safety rope.
