Bulbs

The Story of the Bulbs

Various volunteers with the Friends of High Salvington Mill had sons in the scouts where Bob Potts had a money raising idea. With £500 from the scouts, Bob, Peter Casebow and Roger Ashton would hire a van and drive down to Cambridgeshire, sleeping in the van, overnight, near Ely railway station. This allowed them to arrive at the bulb auctions very early where Bob would bid for lots of bulbs, Peter would run between Bob and Roger and Roger would tally the cost of bids and keep track of how much money was still available.

After the auction they would drive back to Worthing, bag up the sacks of bulbs into small packs and then sell them to parents of the scouts or at scout events where they would earn back double the initial £500.
