Talthur

The Talthur is a lever attached, via a pivot at one end, to the Tailpole. A hook at the end nearest the Steps allows a chain from the edge of the middle of the bottom step to be attached. When the chain is attached, pulling down on the Talthur will raise the steps off the ground. The end of the Talthur can then be hooked under a bracket attached to the Tailpole to keep the steps raised. With the steps raised, it is possible to Wind the mill by pushing against the Tailpole until the sails are facing into the direction the wind is coming from. Once the mill has been winded, the Talthur can be released from capture by the bracket and the steps gently lowered.

When the mill is not in use the chain is unhooked from the end of the Talthur and left to rest on the top step. The Talthur is then allowed to rest on top of the bracket and a small chain attached to the bracket is wrapped around the Tailpole and Talthur and padlocked in place. This secures the Talthur from use and is intended to provide a significant deterrent to someone misguidedly thinking that they might climb over the gate and set the mill running.
