Tailpole
From High Salvington Mill Trust
Back to Mill Site
The Tailpole is a long timber at the rear of the mill used to wind the mill into and out of the direction of the wind. Into the wind means with the sails facing the direction the wind is coming from.
The tail pole is pivoted at one end where it attaches to the buck. A chain, with one end attached higher up on the buck, and the other end attached midway along the tailpole, supports the tailpole's weight. To use the tailpole to wind the mill it is first necessary to lift up the Steps by using the Talthur.
