The replacement of the Crown Tree - a large oak timber around which the entire Buck is built - was undertaken in 1982. An A-frame was constructed and the mill was jacked up to support the weight while the old Crown Tree was removed and a new one installed.

For many years, the old Crown Tree sat in the field South West of the mill before being moved to its present location immediately South of the Gatehouse.
