Safety Awareness.

There is a difference to being aware of health and safety, and having safety awareness. Safety awareness is a continuous alert attitude to the safety aspects of every job we do.

Importance.

Every employer must take precautions to reduce the risks of workplace dangers and provide a safe working environment. Make sure you read and understand the safety arrangements that affect you.

Regulations.

The Health and Safety at Work etc Act 1974 places duties on all persons at work, including employees. Everyone must do there bit to create a safe working environment and accident free workplace.

You must take reasonable care of your own health and safety, the health and safety of those you work with and members of the public. It is important to be aware of the hazards you are exposed to, and the safety precautions in place to protect you.

You must cooperate with your employer and supervisors in anything done in the interest of health and safety, and not interfere with anything provided in the interests of health and safety. This includes wearing any Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) provided and using any safety equipment when provided and as instructed.

Guidance.

  • Play your part in keeping the site TIDY AND SAFE.
  • Look out for warning notices and OBEY the instructions given by them.
  • STAY ALERT when working in the vicinity of moving plant and vehicles.
  • DO NOT OPERATE machines unless you have been trained and are authorised.
  • NEVER RIDE on machines or hoists, which are not designed for passengers.
  • DO NOT INTERFERE with ladders, alter scaffolding or move boards unless you are authorised to.
  • NEVER THROW anything from any height.
  • Lower it properly.
  • DO NOT take shortcuts.
  • REPORT any defects or damage.
  • REPORT any unsafe situations or practices you come across.
  • REPORT all accidents and near misses.
  • ASK your supervisor if you are in any doubt about the safety of a work activity.

Summary.

Employees have a duty to cooperate with the employer and supervisors in anything done in the interests of health, safety and welfare. Successful health and safety management involves all levels of the workforce being actively involved and aware of safety issues.
