OUTCOME RISK EVALUATION
ENTRANCE GATE ALL VISITORS TO THE MILL SITE UPON ARRIVAL VISITORS ARE ISSUED WITH AN INFORMATION SHEET WHICH INCLUDES HEALTH AND SAFETY ADVICE, AND ALSO A "TIMED" TICKET FOR A GUIDED TOUR OF THE MILL WHICH LIMITS THE NUMBER OF PERSONS IN THE MILL.
MILLSITE Uneven grass surface and sloping land levels

The low height of the tailpole.

ALL VISITORS Bruises, sprains, minor cuts and grazes There is a risk of falling over on the uneven surfaces especially in wet conditions. The tailpole is low and visitors should be aware of walking into it.
THE MILL SWEEPS TURNING When the sails are set for turning they can revolve at high speed ALL VISITORS Bruises, broken bones other major injuries. The orange safety fence is erected around the area where the sails fall. This area is obviously out of bounds to all visitors.
THE REAR OF THE BARN & THE BARN WORKSHOP These are private equipment storage and workshop areas. ALL VISITORS Bruises, sprains, minor cuts and grazes The area behind the barn is fenced and the workshop is locked during public visiting times. REQUIRES A

NOTICE

WINDING THE MILL ACTIVITY Raising the steps pushing the mill round with the tailpole and lowering the steps. ALL VISITORS Bruising from collision with the tailpole especially when the steps are being lowered. Feet being crushed when steps are lowered. All visitors should stand away from the steps ( Outside the mill's turning circle) and from the end of the tailpole Only Mill Guides should raise and lower the steps.
ROUNDHOUSE (North West Door) 3 Low even steps down and then a small step over into the roundhouse. low door - 1.55m ( 5ft 2ins ) Falling from climbing on the mill trestle ALL VISITORS Bruises, sprains, minor cuts and grazes Bruising from collision with the doorframe Injury from falling from the trestle Verbal warning about the low door and the step into the roundhouse. Visitors stay in the first segment of the mill's trestle.
ROUNDHOUSE (North East Door) This door is not normally used for visitors. A grass slope down and then a small step over into the roundhouse. Low door - 1.55m ( 5ft 2ins ) Falling from climbing on the mill trestle ALL VISITORS Bruises, sprains, minor cuts and grazes Bruising from collision with the doorframe Injury from falling from the trestle Verbal warning about the possibility of slipping on the grass slope and the low door and the step into the roundhouse. Visitors stay in the first segment of the mill's trestle.
ENTERING THE BUCK OF THE MILL

Tall and steep steps with uneven height of the FIRST and LAST steps leading to the Spout Floor

ALL VISITORS Bruises, broken limbs, other major injuries from falling down the steps. All visitors only use the RIGHT HAND side of the stairway. Adults must supervise children as they ascend and descend. A wire fence on the right hand side stops anyone falling out of the steps side. The mill door must be open and the barrier at the door is up before ascent starts. A verbal warning about the uneven steps.
SPOUTFLOOR

Allergies to wheat and flour

ALL VISITORS Allergic reactions Information should be advised to anyone booking visits that they inform their guests of wheat and flour allergies. There is an allergy warning on the information sheet issued at the gate.
SPOUTFLOOR

Entrance to the mill at the top of the steps.

ALL VISITORS Bruises, broken bones, other major injuries from falling down the steps. Visitors are to be lead inside the body of the mill towards the front, away from the door. The guide will close the barrier behind them. No more than two groups should be in the buck of the mill at any one time.
SPOUT FLOOR Trap door in the floor ALL VISITORS Catching fingers in the doors. Risk of falling, bruising, broken bones, other major injuries. Trap door must not be opened. The retaining clamp must always be in position to prevent opening.
ASCENDING FROM SPOUT FLOOR TO STONE FLOOR Steep ladder style steps with low beam on the right towards the top of the steps. ALL VISITORS Bruises, broken bones, other major injuries from falling down the steps. A risk of bruising from collision with low beam. Verbal instructions by guide about the low beam, especially to adults. Children to be supervised by an adult. There is a banister on the left hand side and a thick rope to hold on the right hand side. Climb facing into the steps
STONE FLOOR Moving parts and machinery ALL VISITORS Bruises, broken limbs, other major injuries. The sweeps must not turn whilst public visitors are inside the body of the mill
STONE FLOOR Uneven floor, risk of tripping. Machinery - Stones and wheels etc

Low beam and spout at the step down to the tail of the mill.

ALL VISITORS Bruises, sprains, minor cuts and grazes Risk of falling if climbing on machinery. Risk of hitting head on the low obstructions Verbal instructions by guide, especially about the low obstructions. Children to be supervised by an adult. Children are not allowed to climb on the machinery nor the ladder to the bin floor at the tail of the mill.
STONE FLOOR Trap door at the tail of the mill and ladder to the bin floor. Confined space on the bin floor. ALL VISITORS Bruises, broken limbs, other major injuries. A wooden cover should be placed over the ladder during all visiting times, as the ladder stands on the trap door, this is then also secure. The trap door must not be opened. The retaining clamp must always be in position to prevent opening. No visitors allowed on the bin floor or the ladder.
DESCENDING FROM THE STONE FLOOR TO THE SPOUT FLOOR, and FROM THE SPOUT FLOOR TO OUTSIDE. ALL VISITORS Bruises, broken limbs, other major injuries from falling down the steps. Children must be supervised at all times. Guides will recommend that all persons descend backwards, facing the steps. Guides will offer assistance if requested.
GRANARY Steps into the granary are low in height and evenly spaced. The door to the granary is above the steps. ALL VISITORS Bruises, broken limbs, other major injuries from falling down the steps. Guides will recommend holding the side upright bar of the steps when entering and exiting the granary.
