The following regulations and laws are of relevance to the maintenance and operation of a traditional windmill for grinding wheat into flour and opening it up to the public.

Maintenance
- COSHH - Control of substances hazardous to health. Chemicals stored and/or used in the workshop, shed and kitchen are covered.
- Lifting Operations and Lifting Equipment Regulations 1998 (LOLER). Steps chain, climbing rig for sails, lifting gear for stone raising/lowering.
Opening to the Public
Milling Flour
Note: HSM does not sell the souvenir flour it produces as food.
- COSHH - Control of substances hazardous to health. Flour can be a hazardous substance with safety (fire) and health (allergy and lung) risks.
- The Miscellaneous Food Additive Regulations 1995. If HSM were to process its wholemeal flour into white flour then some additives would be required.
