Mary Coote's Ashes Being Scattered

Mary Stewart (nee Coote) was the granddaughter (?) of Alfred Samuel Coote, miller, baker and corn merchant, recorded as miller at High Salvington in 1898 who may also be the Coote recorded as miller in 1914. Mary Coote's ashes were scattered around the dog rose on 2nd March 2008.

From the minutes of the Board meeting of 29th October 2007, "It was also sad to report that Ian Stewart had been in touch about the recent demise of his mother, Mary (nee Coote). The Cootes had been bakers in the Worthing area with a long association with High Salvington Mill, before selling out to Knowles bakery. Ian wondered if it would be possible to scatter his mother's ashes on the mill site. There was general agreement to this, and Mr. Casebow formulated some criteria for consideration, which appeared to be met, in this case, namely that the individual should have been a member of the Trust and have had a long association with the Mill."

Regrettably, the dog rose was grubbed up by the restoration team installing the village pump in 2021.
