Appendix 5 – Glossary

Term Definition
clutch rope The rope used to operate the “clutch” which allows a miller to lift the runner stone from the spoutfloor.
crowntree The baulk of timber resting on the post around which the entire buck of the mill is constructed.
glut box The box which forms a socket to hold a spindle bearing. In this case, the spindle is the quant.
hemlath A longitudinal member at the outer edge of a sail frame.
manyheight A stepped wedge with a handle used to provide varying angles of leverage when lifting the runner stone off the base stone.
pop hole A “window” with a removable hatch cover instead of glass.
quant The spindle which transmits force (via a stone nut) from the wheel to the runner stone.
quarterbar One of four diagonal members which support the post.
roundhouse A circular building that protects the trestle from the elements.
runner stone The upper of a pair of stones that rotates against a fixed base stone to grind.
rynde The forked part of a quant that slots into a carved impression in the runner stone so that the quant can rotate the stone.
sail bar A horizontal member of a sail frame. It must be strong enough to support climbing to affix common sails or shutters.
spoutfloor The floor of the windmill where the spouts emerge to release ground or graded flour.
sprattle beam The beam which holds the upper bearing of the quant.
staddle stone One of a number of mushroom shaped stones used for standing a granary so that rodents cannot climb into the granary to feed on stored grain or flour.
stonefloor The floor of the windmill where the stones are installed.
stone nut A cog attached to the quant which engages with the wheel so that its turning will rotate the quant, and via the rynde, the runner stone.
sweep A windmill sail.
tailpole The long timber emerging from the rear (tail) of a mill that is used for winding the mill into the wind.
talthur A lever attached to the tailpole used to lift the steps so that the mill may be winded.
tentering gear The mechanism used to “stretch” or shrink the gap between runner and base stone.
trestle The structure used to support a mill post is comprised of crosstrees at 90 degrees supporting diagonal quarter bars which hold up the post.
