AUTHORITY High Salvington Mill Trust Ltd is a charitable trust company limited by guarantee, set up to protect and maintain High Salvington Windmill and the site on which it stands.

The authority of the company rests with an elected Board of Management

The company has no employees.

The Trust operations are supported by volunteers.

MILL SITE The site covers approximately half an acre and contains five buildings :-# The windmill
  1. The Gatehouse
  2. The New Barn
  3. The Granary


(e) The Store Shed.

Electricity, Water and Main Drainage are the only utility services supplied to the site.

The electricity entry main and meter are situated in a small purpose built brick unit on the north perimeter of the site.

The surface of the site is mainly grass with surrounding hedges, both of which are cut regularly.

The fire assembly point is by the electrical box on the north perimeter of the site.

The nearest fire hydrant is in the road at the north east corner of the site.

GENERAL Raising the alarm –

All guides are provided with whistles.

A whistle will be blown by whoever discovers a fire.

All persons must assemble by the electrical box as quickly and safely as possible.

The LEAD MILLER will check with other volunteers that all persons are out of the buildings.

The LEAD MILLER will arrange contact with the emergency services and liaise with them when they arrive

THE WINDMILL The numbers of visitors on public open days permitted in the mill are restricted by the issue of time tickets. The maximum number in a party is ten plus a guide. Only two parties are permitted on the upper floors of the mill at any one time.

The windmill stands in the centre of the site and is isolated from the other buildings by at least 16 yards.

The mill is approximately 30 feet high and made almost entirely from wood

Ground Floor - The Roundhouse is slightly below ground level with three steps down.

Access is by one of two doors ( North East or North West ) depending on where the sweeps are positioned.

The electricity control box for the mill is on the north wall of the roundhouse.

A smoke alarm is fitted above the control box.

1st Floor - The Spout Floor Access from the ground is by an exterior, wide wooden staircase to a door on the right of the stairway which has a handrail with wiremesh infill is situated on the right hand side.

A smoke alarm is fitted to the front of the mill.

2nd Floor – Stone Floor Accessed from the spout floor by a fixed wooden staircase with a hand rail on the left hand side and a hand rope on the right.

3rd Floor – Dust Floor itself approximately 2 feet square is accessed by a removable ladder – No public access.

A smoke alarm is fitted in the apex of the roof.

Extinguishers are situated in the roundhouse, and on the ground first and second floors, recommended, supplied and serviced annually by contractors of Worthing Borough Council.

THE GATEHOUSE An isolated wooden building situated at the site entrance gate close to Furze Road.

A single storey wooden structure with a clay tiled pitched roof measuring approximately 22 feet long, 11 ½ feet deep and 14 feet high.

There is storage space above the ceiling.

Access is by a stable door at the northern end of the eastern side.

A smoke alarm is fitted to the ceiling close to the door.

An extinguisher recommended and serviced annually by contractors of Worthing Borough Council.

THE LONG BARN The wooden building is isolated from other buildings and situated south of the windmill at the southern edge of the site.

A single storey wooden structure with a clay tiled pitched roof measuring approximately 48 feet long, 12 ½ feet deep and 14 feet high.

There is storage space above the ceiling.

The length of the building is divided into four sections.

The electricity control box for the barn is situated to the right of tool store door.

Section 1- East end – A kitchen approximately 12 ½ feet square for light refreshments. Access by single door at the eastern end.

Contains electric water boilers and freezers.

A smoke alarm is fitted to the ceiling.

One extinguisher and fire blanket recommended and serviced annually by contractors of Worthing Borough Council.

Section 2 – A Souvenir Shop approximately 17 ½ feet long and 6 feet deep.

Access by single door on the right hand side.

Section 3 – Tool store and workshop approximately8 feet wide and 12 ½ feet deep.

Access by single door.

A smoke alarm is fitted to the ceiling.

One extinguisher recommended and serviced annually by contractors of Worthing Borough Council.

Section 4 – Toilets area approximately 10 feet long and 12 ½ feet deep divided into two units.

Access by two doors at the western end of the building.


GRANARY

A wooden structure standing on nine staddle stones, with a clay tiled pitched roof. Approximately 17 ½ feet long, 13 feet wide and 12 feet high.

Access by five wooden steps to a single wide door.

A smoke alarm is fitted to the ceiling.

One extinguisher recommended and serviced annually by contractors of Worthing Borough Council.


STORE SHED Built entirely of wood, measures approximately 10 feet long and 6 feet wide with a single, pad locked door at the western end.

Used for the storage of mowers and contains a steel cupboard for storage of dangerous substances, paint, white spirit, wood preservers etc. and a locked bin for mower fuel.
