Betty Potts

From High Salvington Mill Trust

In her own words, "I was first involved in 1980's cutting the grass with Bob. My first manual job was helping to replace the felt on the old roundhouse roof with John Simmonds. Every 1st and 3rd Sundays from April to September I took the Open Sunday Boards to the A24 and A27 by 8.30am, reason to attract people visiting from Worthing for the day to come to the mill later. I also made drinks for the faithful volunteers (on Sunday mornings) who made sure the mill and grounds were ready for the afternoon opening (approx. 20 years). I organised the original rotas of helpers every February. Delivered Mill leaflets to all hotels in Worthing (12), also to local shops, sent (no emails) and delivered adverts to the Herald and West Sussex Gazette for each open day. With little money in the kitty and no bunting for the fete in early days, I cut up a red white and blue plaid skirt and made some. It is still used today.

I took on organising the tombola and running it for the fete day, always looking for prizes wherever we went. A few bottles with gold or silver wraps always attracted people. A selection of prizes were ornaments, toiletries, garden gnomes, boxes of tissues (150 in a box), boxes of sweets and chocolates, etc.
